The Office of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation sets the strategic direction and oversees the administration of the University of Ottawa’s research enterprise, including funding, equipment and facilities, international collaborations, partnerships and business development.
Position Purpose
-
Provides strategic and tactical advice to the research community and implements innovative communications strategies with the objective of raising the profile of research internally and externally on a local, national and international scale.

Manages the development of digital communications strategies (Web, social media, video and photography). Directs the work of the Intermediate Specialist, Mutimedia and Web Design, as well as two Intermediate Specialists, Digital Communications and Marketing. Ensures that the Web and content team is operating at the highest level of efficiency and productivity.

Ensures that all communication materials and strategies support the research sector’s reputation and its main objectives.
Specific Accountabilities
-
Manages, plans and implements digital communications strategies and content (Web, social media, video and photography), ensuring they enhance the reputation and support the main objectives of the Office of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation (OVPRI). Ensures that projects meet deadlines and allocated budgets.

Participates in the development of strategic plans for communications and marketing by setting priorities, defining audiences, adopting various tactics and methods, and establishing key performance indicators. Delivers regular reporting of cross-platform performance metrics and makes recommendations to the Research Communications and Marketing team as well as to OVPRI senior management.

Direct the work of the two Intermediate Specialists, Digital Communications and Marketing by supervising the production of appropriate content to promote research and innovation at uOttawa.

Directs the work of the Intermediate Specialist, Mutimedia and Web Design by defining project scope with clients, prioritizing, facilitating and tracking project status, identifying and solving problems and issues, allocating appropriate resources, and ensuring that projects are appropriately prioritized, completed on schedule, on budget and at the highest levels of quality.

Provides editorial and communications strategy advice and guidance to researchers, faculty communications teams and services within the OVPR with the aim of improving their marketing and communications activities.
Knowledge, Experience and Skills
-
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education and experience, preferably in communications, journalism, marketing or a related area;

Five years’ experience in journalism/communications/public relations, writing and editing in French and/or English for print and the Web;

Proven experience in project management;

In-depth knowledge of omni-channel marketing and communications, user experience (digital/Web) and online engagement;

Excellent ability to co-ordinate a variety of tasks under pressure, managing priorities, meeting strict deadlines and following up on deliverables;

Strong organizational, planning and analytical skills;

Proactive, creative and resourceful;

Excellent interpersonal skills and leadership;

Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, and to interact with creative professionals in a positive manner in a fast-paced environment;

Sound judgment, initiative, tact and diplomacy, as well as high level of discretion in handling confidential information;

Solid knowledge of computer systems, including CMS (e.g. Drupal, WordPress), video and image editing software (e.g. Adobe Suite, Final Cut Pro), Microsoft Office, databases, etc., knowledge of HTML editing
