Our Vale Base Metals Finance Department is currently seeking a:

Advisor, Finance (Thompson Operation) located in Sudbury, ON with frequent travel to Thompson, MB

The Opportunity:
The purpose of the Advisor, Finance Operations role is to support and influence decision making at the Mining & Milling, Processing or plant level to maximize business value (i.e.. financial, production, value, impacts downstream), to identify opportunities for the plant to improve business value generation, and to uphold financial controls in accordance with accounting principles.

The Advisor, Finance Operations is a versatile member of the leadership team at the Mining & Milling, Processing and plant(s) and functions in their area of responsibility ( by actively participating in, challenging and analyzing fundamental and strategic decision making.

This role will be based in Sudbury but will support Thompson Operations, with frequent travel to Thompson (15-30%).

Accountabilities:
Finance Leadership:
Understand and coordinate the defining of operational/plant/North Atlantic, Mining & Milling and Processing Plants business value drivers (coordinating)
Track business performance against value drivers and educate others on operational/plant/North Atlantic, Mining & Milling and Processing Plants business value drivers (coordinating)
Initiate cross functional teams to perform deviation and root cause analysis and implement action plans that are measurable and contribute to the overall business value drivers Monitor, assess, communicate and assist production areas in using business information systems to access information (SAP) – (coordinating)
Coordinate work with plant teams through the Central, Mining & Milling and Processing nodes to develop action plans that improve business value decisions that improve production, cost and capital performance (coordinating)
Identify and propose business value opportunities as well as optimization of operation business plans (coordinating)
Design and deliver business value acumen within the business (at plants and through Central, Mining & Milling and Processing node work) (coordinating)
Provide high quality analytical support to ensure the range of financial outcomes, value drivers and risks are fully evaluated and aligned to strategic intent of plant, operations and corporate levels (service giving)
Initiate the assembly of cross functional teams as assigned (e.g. lower pond slimes) - (service giving)
Work with Central group to develop appropriate control systems that act as early warning mechanisms to identify variances to targets in sufficient time to both course correct in the case of risk and to capture opportunities wherever possible. (service giving)
Identify risks and variances in performance in sufficient time to enable effective course corrections. (coordinating)
Collaborate with Central group in creating and revising financial policy. (advisory)
Demonstrate independent initiative to improve business process knowledge. (Service giving)
Mentor peers to increase their analytical and business process acumen. (advisory)
Assist in the development of activity-based budgets & forecasts in conjunction with plant contacts and through Mining & Milling, Processing and Central nodes, using production and cost drivers
Attend plant update meetings with plant management as requested by Business Analysts and /or Finance Manager and heads of Mining & Milling and Processing Plants meetings

Monitoring and Analyzing
Using data to measure and interpret key financial and non-financial KPI’s (Mining & Milling, Processing Plants or plant level), including business value drivers, trends, tracking and reporting progress of strategic objectives and recommended corrective actions to key stakeholders (coordinating)
Continue to streamline and optimize business processes to improve the timeliness of reporting results. (coordinating)
Monitor and assess use of business information systems to access information (ex. SAP) (monitoring)
Identify and understand the cause-effect relationship between the KPIs and define the root cause of the deviation

Planning
Communicating, challenging and coordinating the development of the annual strategic plan, budget and forecasts (production, operating, period and capital costs) at the Mining & Milling, Processing Plants or plant level– (coordinating)
Provide support to head of Mining & Milling, Processing and various plant management throughout NA for analysis of scenario plans and preparation of nimble operating plans

Business Case Subject Matter Expert (SME)
Have a thorough understanding of business impacts (financial/value) within the NA, Mining & Milling, Processing Plants and plant structure and awareness of interfaces external to the various operations (production, inventories, cost, capex, purchase feed) – (monitoring)
Application of appropriate tools for business case evaluations (ex. mines Ore Evaluation Model, Ebitda, Margin) – (prescribing)
Be a member in the capital risk ranking process at the overall level (NA, Mining & Milling, Processing Plants) to ensure all site capital proposals meet cost benefit and business value justifications, provide analysis and advice for all capex submissions. (coordinating)

Accounting and Financial Reporting
Ensure that costs charged are valid and consistent with generally accepted accounting principles and Vale policies and procedures (estimated SES process, application of capital vs. operating (Prescribing)

i. Understand and analyze the components and drivers of operating costs

ii. Understand and analyses the contract expenditure impacting costs

iii. Understand and analyze the impact of production challenges and plans on costs

iv. Understand and analyze capital expenditure and the impact that production challenges and plans have on it

Assist in the closing of the NA Mines & Milling month-end process, which entails providing information and analysis on metals flow, inventory imbalances, product costs and unit costs (coordinating)
Provide support to the Thompson site management team in terms of cost analysis, financial results and financial sign-off on operational changes impacting costs and/or revenue

d. Costs analysis includes reporting on absolute cost for the period (month, quarter, year, YTD etc.), cost in terms of cost category and unit costs

e. Financial results analysis includes reporting on actual vs. budget, actual vs. plan and plan vs. budget numbers over various timeframes

Ensure financial reporting requirements are delivered accurately and timely (Prescribing)
Prepare and analyze quarterly reconciliations of key balances. Analyze costs for potential opportunities to reduce or eliminate costs. (Coordinating)
Review plant process orders and key inventory balances for month end close process
Review and provide analytical insight to plant specific business cases for a specific plant or across various areas within the NA structure. Challenge information provided and support the team on the follow up to ensure effective application of recommendations. (Auditing)
Contribute to the generation of reports which provide accurate & timely analysis (Coordinating)
Educate the operations teams on the financial impact that their decisions have and work with them to minimize any negative cost impacts
Provide guidance and make decisions on capital vs operating spend at the plant, capital lease criteria with direction and oversight from NA Financial Reporting group
Attend all relevant plant meetings such as daily/weekly/monthly update meetings
Lead the accumulation and analysis of the monthly forecast using tools such as the production plan and cost driver calculation (service giving)
Organize and coordinate yearly fixed asset reviews to ensure accurate and up to date asset balances and life expectancy (coordinate)
Provide information to external and internal auditors to ensure integrity and compliance of financial statements (coordinate)
Any other tasks as assigned from time to time.

Education:
Undergraduate Degree, Business related field or Finance
Accounting, business/commerce, education in engineering, discipline is preferred

Experience:
Five to 10 years of progressive relevant experience in a resource, processing or manufacturing environment.
Preferred knowledge and understanding of Accounting principles
Professional accounting designation optional CA, C.M.A or C.G.A
Cross-functional team including professional accountants, MBA, Engineering

Knowledge and Skills:
Strong knowledge of finance and business analysis
Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders
Organized, self-motivated and ability to work independently
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Adobe Professional
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
