Reporting to the Executive Director, the Child & Youth Mental Health Counsellor provides support to children, youth and their parents/caregivers. Services provided include crisis intervention, behaviour management, life skills and social skills training, either on a one-t-one basis or in a group environment.The position aids the client in identifying, understanding and overcoming personal/family problems, strengthening self-esteem, social and academic success at school, and in establishing and achieving realistic goals.

KEY ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Conducts intake/assessment interviews with new clients to get background information.
Develops and implements counselling and intervention programs to assist clients in determining goals and the means of attaining them. Plans, prepares and conducts individual or group counselling session with clients.
Monitors client’s progress and well-being and evaluates the effectiveness of planned counselling and support.
Recognizes potential crisis situations, analyzes such situations accurately, develops strategies to deal with such situations, and informs Executive Director or designate when such situations arise. Must report incidents of child abuse and neglect in accordance with provincial legislation.
Acts as an advocate for the client, provides support for them while the client is in the program and, as appropriate, provides follow up support to them upon leaving the program. May accompany client to appointments.
Maintains accurate reports and records on clients. Ensures that all required documentation is complete. Reports and discusses case planning and concerns with mental health professionals, social workers and others as required.
Provides life skills and behaviour management training to clients. Counsellor may use physical, recreational, social and educational activities as a counselling modality. Provides clients with a positive role model.
Identifies social, economic, recreational and educational services in the community that will meet the client’s needs. Liaises with other agencies, professionals, and the community.

ABILITIES/SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE

Well developed interpersonal, counselling, oral and written communication skills
Good organization, time and general management skills
Knowledge of group process and facilitation techniques
Knowledge of theory, principles and practices in the field
Demonstrated experience as a team member

A Master's degree or Psychiatric Nurse designation is preferred; however an acceptable combination of education and training will be considered.
