Job Product: Student understanding of Latin that furthers the development of character and intellect.

General Purpose: The Latin teacher is responsible for developing students’ academic excellence and virtue by creating a positive culture of inquiry and learning and providing students with challenging and meaningful learning activities and experiences.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Demonstrates subject matter knowledge

Written command of a standard version of Latin (the version used by a formally educated speaker of the language of the time period)
Knowledge of culturally and historically significant literary and non-literary texts and authors associated with Latin; literary traditions, periods, and genres
Characteristics of beginning, intermediate, and advanced reading and writing pedagogy in Latin
Similarities and differences between Latin and English
Theories of, and differences between, first and second language acquisition, as well as of modern and ancient language acquisition
Knowledge of the other arts (historical traditions, genres, and major artists) associated with?Latin
Knowledge of the political, social, and intellectual history of the country or culture with which Latin is or was originally associated

Plans curriculum and instruction

Delivers effective instruction

Manages classroom climate and operation

Promotes achievement

Meets professional responsibilities

Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree, preferably in the Classics/Latin, with at least 36 semester hours in Latin

Colorado teaching license is not required

Experience:
Prior teaching experience preferred, but is not required
