Your Opportunity

The Freshwater Aquatics Team has multiple opportunities for Intermediate to Senior Field Biologists and Technicians. The successful candidate will join our team as a Field Aquatics Qualified Environmental Professional (QEP) related to a major capital project in northern British Columbia.

This is a contract from July to December with potential for extension.

Your Key Responsibilities

Managing, planning, and leading fish salvage or water quality field programs
Providing recommendations as a Qualified Environmental Professional
Interpret water quality data in relation to aquatic biota, livestock, and/or human health
Leading multiple crews in field activities
Manage tasks according to approved scopes of work
Understand recent and existing practices and techniques for sampling and analysis of fisheries, fish habitat and water quality data from streams, rivers and lakes
Participate in Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) Policies, Procedures, Standards and Guidelines in the execution of all work
Contribute technical guidance to the field team by providing supervision and training

Your Capabilities and Credentials

Proven technical, communication, and organization skills
Understanding of fish habitat assessments, fish rescue and construction water quality monitoring
Knowledge of current provincial and federal government regulatory requirements and sediment quality guidelines
Knowledge of dewatering for construction activities
Familiarity with freshwater ecology in BC and fish identification knowledge

Required experience in:
leading field crews in the execution of fish salvage and/or water quality field programs
following health and safety protocols for field programs
conducting fish and fish habitat assessments
working on remote field programs
preparing dewatering or care of water plans
construction experience
collecting field data using digital data collection platforms (asset, but not required)
Ability to work in a collaborative team environment
Capable of working with and guiding clients and contractors
Manages and prioritizes time when executing multiple parallel objectives
Able to deal with changing conditions and priorities while in the field
Ability to travel for up to two weeks at a time and participate in a rotational field schedule
Thrives in an environment with diverse and dynamic projects, and enjoys working on multi-disciplinary scopes of work

Education and Experience

A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences

Registered, or eligible to register, with the British Columbia College of Applied Biology is required.

Minimum of 5-10 years of experience as an aquatic biologist, with experience in freshwater systems in BC

An electrofishing certificate is required.

Other types of training are assets: First Aid, UTV, Swiftwater Rescue

Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
