Reporting to the Canadian Director of Tax, the Canadian Sales Tax Manager will

Manage all aspects of Lafarge Canada’s Sales and use tax and Excise tax compliance and audits, tax planning, business advisory, and the business processes (SAP Tax engines);
Manage the annual GST/HST pension plan computations and annual insurance excise tax returns;
Lead multiple Federal and Provincial sales and use and excise tax audits, as they arise and negotiate issues / settlements (issues up to $1M+);
Manage and ensure corporate compliance for sales and use and excise tax for the Lafarge Canada group of companies (timely and accurate filings of 40+ returns per month to avoid fines and penalties; total annual sales tax liability $300M+)
Monitor, and develop tax policies and procedures, including field-training company personnel on best practices;
Act as a specialized subject matter expert for and advise senior management in Canada of the sales and use and excise tax impact of acquisitions and divestitures and day-to-day transactions, including identification, development and implementation of best practices to reduce cash tax exposure and liability;
Supervise, mentor and develop staff; and
Lead and manage other special projects as assigned.

In addition, the Sales Tax Manager – Canada will work closely with and provide back-up to the Canadian Income Tax Manager during peak working periods.

Manage the preparation and filing of approximately 40 federal and provincial monthly sales and use tax and excise return filings;
Manage all Canadian sales tax audits including the negotiation of minimum settlements;
Manage and direct the ABS (Americas Business Services) tax analyst;
Be a specialized subject matter expert on Canadian sales & use and excise tax for the business, ABS and NASC (IT group);
Assist in the resolution of P2P and O2C Canadian sales tax issues;
Develop recovery and exception tools in conjunction with ABS;
Minimize Lafarge Canada’s sales and use taxes through development of tax planning solutions, ongoing communication and training for business units and ABS;
Advise management on the sales tax effects of their business activities, investments and divestitures, including tax due diligence. Propose strategies to minimize tax liability;
Manage sales tax reviews in conjunction with external experts to identify and obtain tax refunds;
Overall responsibility for the direction and maintenance of SAP Canadian sales tax tables;
Ensure adequate internal controls are in place to protect the organization from non-compliance with taxing authorities;
Analyze all new tax legislation or changed administrative practises and communicate to affected parties as appropriate;
Research and develop reasonable, supportable positions in writing for all tax-sensitive transactions;
Work closely with the Tax Director, the Income Tax Manager and others on indirect tax and other tax-related projects that have a high dollar impact to the company’s P&L and balance sheet;
Demonstrates a commitment to communicating, improving and adhering to safety policies in all work environments and areas;
Maintain personal and corporate integrity in all actions.

Relationships with Others Jobs:
The Sales Tax Manager reports to the Director of Tax, Canada who in turn reports to the VP Tax
Close interaction with Business Units, Regional Finance Staff as well as the North American Business Services group
Close interaction with other members of the tax team

Education and Work Experience:
Undergraduate degree in Finance, Accounting, or Business
Professional accounting designation required (CPA or Equivalent)
Minimum 6-8 years of progressive Canadian sales and excise tax experience in public accounting and/or industry; including participation in tax research and planning projects.
Exposure to British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan Provincial Sales Tax is an asset
Exposure to Canadian income tax legislation and compliance is an asset
Completion of CPA Canada in-depth GST/HST course

Knowledge and Skills:
Excellent Canadian sales and excise tax knowledge (Federal and Provincial laws, rules and regulations)
Experience in the building materials industry an asset
Experience with SAP Canadian sales tax management
Exceptional organizational and supervisory skills
Demonstrated strong judgment abilities
Excels as an individual contributor, is curious and overcomes knowledge gaps effectively
Ability to evaluate, analyze and prioritize work under tight timelines and problem solve a variety of tasks simultaneously to ensure timely and accurate completion
Able to work as a member of diverse teams including members from different functional areas (including Treasury, Accounting and Finance) and locations and the ability to function as a team leader of such teams
Experience with online research tools
Experience with automated sales tax solutions
Excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as presentation skills
Good negotiating skills an asset
