The Faculty of Forestry currently offers three one-year course-based professional master (CBM) programs for both domestic and international students that have at least Bachelor degrees but seek further professional development. New similar programs are in planning stages.
The Masters of Geomatics for Environmental Management (MGEM) Program is an established nine-month course-based program. Our 30-35 student cohort per year is a diverse student group that includes a mix of recent graduates, early and mid-career professionals, both domestic and international.
The Coordinator will ensure quality delivery of all components of the MGEM Program and will work 50% of the time with the MGEM Director and the Assistant Dean, Professional Education and International Collaboration on development, marketing, delivery and continual improvement of the program.
The other 50% of the time the Coordinator will work assisting in planning, organization and delivery of other existing and future professional Master programs and other professional/continuing education programs and courses under the direction of Assistant Dean of Assistant Dean, Professional Education and International Collaboration.
Reports to and works under the general direction of the Program Director and the Assistant Dean, Professional Education and Int'l Collaboration regarding the MGEM program and the Assistant Dean regarding the other 50% of the work. Works in collaborative alliances across all levels of stakeholders, including: faculty and staff, students, other UBC units, as well as external organizations (domestic & international).
Job duties consist of following categories, 1) Program development and maintenance 2) Curriculum Development, 3) Student Support, 4) Promotion, 5) Admissions 6) Finance Management 7) Other:
1. Programs: Responsible for the creation, maintenance, and evaluation of Faculty's professional programs as appropriate to retain the first-class reputation of Faculty's offerings. Responsible for course offerings and its content creation. Key participant together with program director in the review of course objectives ensuring continuity between courses. Plays an active role in the recruitment, selection and review of instructional staff. Oversees the work of instructors in all areas except curriculum. Manages the development of formal and informal programs to guide lecturers and instructors in program delivery. Ensures the accuracy of program materials. Key member in the continuous quality improvement cycle for faculty professional masters programs
2. Curriculum Development: Manages program/curriculum design, manages program support staff including administrative support, research staff and instructional design. Manages the planning and updating of academic schedules; selects and supervises Teaching Assistants; monitors grades; responsible for identifying and mitigating assignment bottlenecks; Oversees the update of required learning materials (books and software); working with all CBMs to ensure overlap is optimized and each programs needs are addressed. Manages proper tracking of accreditation standards related to provincial and federal regulations. Plans, develops, co-ordinates, implements and manages educational activities such as workshops, seminars, consultations, presentations and lectures, writing communication);
3. Student Support: Manages and leads meeting with cohort representatives; Advises on related employment and volunteering opportunities. Plans and oversees implementation of social events jointly with Graduate Students' Office.
4. Marketing and Promotion: Responds to enquiries and concerns from workshop instructors, faculty, staff and participants; answering questions from prospective applicants; planning and holding online and in-person informational sessions; Key contact for course based masters program in the Faculty's digital marketing campaign and development of promotional material.
5. Admissions: reviewing and summarizing applications; holding annual applications meeting; reviewing and updating admission materials; providing details on summer learning and program content. This work is done in close coordination with Graduate Students' Office.
6. Financial Management: Develops and suggests the optimal allocation of resources for course delivery and works with Assistant Dean with budget creation and monitors budgets to actual for reporting purposes. Oversees requisitions and payments. Works with Assistant Dean to ensure that appropriate methodologies, processes and procedures are followed for record keeping. Is responsible for the overall accuracy of student records.
7. Other duties: Performs other related duties as necessary in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of this position
Reports to the Assistant Dean, Professional Education and Int'l Collaboration and MGEM Director (regarding MGEM program). Works independently and with wide latitude and receives feedback and direction from the Program Director and Assistant Dean. The incumbent will exercise resourcefulness in the coordination and delivery of MGEM programs and other professional master programs for potential and current students. Work is reviewed against achievement of project objectives and in terms of quality and effectiveness in meeting educational goals
This position supervises program support staff, graduate teaching assistants, temporary staff and Work Learn students contributing to the program. Supervision includes hiring and training new staff; performance management; mentorship and professional development; discipline and termination as required. The incumbent supports Graduate TAs within the MGEM and other programs and supervises undergraduate work learn positions as necessary. The incumbent may set office priorities; organize and adjust workflow, etc.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
This position requires judgment, tact, discretion and initiative to an outstanding degree. Errors in judgment with internal or external constituents could have negative impact on the unit and its programs, the program Director, the Office of the Associate Dean Professional Education and International Collaboration, the Office of the Dean, and the University resulting in poor public relations, financial costs, and loss of credibility. Consequence of error is high. There is a high degree of interaction with others. Appropriate communication and attention to detail is critical.
Work must often meet tight deadlines and requires the incumbent to perform well under pressure. The incumbent will be expected to respond well to unexpected circumstances and exercise independent judgment. The incumbent must demonstrate exceptional interpersonal skills in dealing with team members and stakeholders, faculty, staff, students, and other members of the university and community. Inappropriate or errant communications of sensitive issues could have a serious impact on operations and have legal implications.
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Masters degree involving geomatics, environmental science or forestry preferred. Minimum of four years experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Relevant experience in field and classroom instruction and experience with adult learners is highly desirable. The Program Coordinator must have experience in curriculum development, facilitation and have demonstrated excellent organizational and interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team is necessary as well as ability to work on tight deadlines. Practical professional experience in geomatics is highly desirable. Understanding of the mission and structure of continuing education and professional development is necessary. Effective oral and written communication, supervisory, conceptual and problem-solving skills is required. Capacity to understand and interpret University regulations and policies.
