Free Footie supports youth from vulnerable and marginalized communities to play sport entirely for free. This includes free transportation, uniforms, equipment, coaching, games and registration fees.

Our goal is to use sport as way for kids to make friends, find a place to belong and be surrounded by great coaches/mentors who believe in them.

We are actively recruiting those coaches/mentors to work with our youth!


You will coach youth between the ages of 8-12 in multiple sports (primarily soccer and basketball). This includes coaching during games and delivering practice plans provided by the head coach. These practices not only incorporate skills in the sport of the season, but also learning in social, emotional and mental health.

You will also be paired with a youth from high school who is learning to be a coach. These youth are often graduates of our Free Footie program. The youth will act as your assistant coach and your role will be to mentor the youth and prepare them to step into the role of a head coach in future.

Who we are looking for:

  • You hold recognized certifications as a coach in either soccer or basketball or both.
  • You are a multi-sport athlete or coach who is great with kids and a great role model.
  • You love sport/play and understand its power as tool for social good.
  • You will be a strong ambassador for our program, our youth and the diverse communities that make up Edmonton.
  • You ideally hold your first aid certifications or be willing to get certified immediately.
  • You have a valid driver's licence with no at fault accidents.
  • You must be willing to submit a Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • IDEAL CANDIDATES: Teachers, education graduates and students, youth workers.

Program Schedule & Time requirements: 3-4 hours per week

  • The Free Footie program runs every Wednesday from 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm
  • The program plays out of four locations: Commonwealth Recreation Centre + the East, West and South Soccer Centres. You will be matched with a team at one venue and stay with that team and venue for the remainder of the year.
  • As well as coaching you will attend training and education sessions, as required.
  • You will attend certification sessions provided by Free Footie once every two months. These session will build your qualifications as a coach and mentor.
  • Coaches will be paid $15-$18/hr pending on experience.
