The Thrift Store Assistant Manager is responsible for the management of the Treasure Chest Thrift Store under the guidance of and in close collaboration with the Thrift Store Manager. The Assistant Manager is responsible for the supervision and training of Thrift Store volunteers. The Assistant Manager works closely with the Manager to ensure that the strategies to meet the store’s sales targets are met and to provide appropriate feedback and coaching to volunteers seeking pre-employment experience. During their shifts, the Assistant Manager is also responsible to ensure that the store operates in accordance with CMHA’s principles of a psychologically safe workplace, and develops supportive and effective working relationships with all staff and volunteers. The store operates as a social enterprise. It has both business goals and social programming goals.


  • Assisting the Thrift Store Manager with operating the store and/or being responsible for managing the store on behalf of the Manager
  • Ensuring the store is open and operating according to scheduled hours, and conforms to all applicable safety, security and other policies and procedures
  • Responsible for supervision and/or training of Thrift Store volunteers, including scheduling, training, and coaching
  • Responsible for cash handling and cashing out at the end of the day
  • Ensuring all merchandising, inventory, sales, marketing, and other retail procedures are followed to provide a high quality service to customers and to meet revenue goals
  • Ensuring a safe and healthy working environment by observing universal precautions and maintains knowledge and understanding of, and complies with, all CMHA policies and procedures as outlined in the policy and procedures manual, health and safety manual, job description and other documentation
  • Completes First Aid/CPR, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training, Suicide Awareness Training, Mental Health First Aid or any other training as deemed appropriate by the employer
  • Submits regular activity reports, timesheets, expense forms, etc. as required
  • Represents the agency in a professional manner
  • Provides coverage for other program staff as appropriate and required
  • Other related duties as appropriate and required


  • High School Diploma or equivalent education and experience
  • Experience in a retail supervisory position with a solid understanding of retail store operations, or other related experience
  • Ability to operate a cash register, including Interac™ and to confidently and accurately handle cash and cash out procedures
  • Demonstrated understanding and appreciation of volunteering and volunteer program management standards
  • Ability to multi-task efficiently and work well in a busy environment
  • Able to work independently and as part of a small team
  • Ability to follow verbal and written directions
  • Ability to supervise and train volunteers
  • General knowledge of mental illness and of the community that CMHA works with
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
  • Ability to work alone or with others, as required
  • Excellent written and communication skills, with strong customer service skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and to take initiative.
  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office software
