Vice President, Business & Legal Affairs
The Legal & Business Affairs team in our Toronto office is looking for a new Vice President, Business & Legal Affairs.
Reporting to the Executive Vice President, Legal & Business Affairs, the Vice President, Legal & Business Affairs will be responsible for providing and overseeing the provision of legal and business affairs counsel to the Blue Ant Media international distribution team and North American production teams with a focus on integration, collaboration, consensus building and the most efficient use of resources. Broad and deep legal and business affairs experience in Canadian unscripted production and distribution is imperative. The successful candidate should also be a creative problem solver with the ability to manage competing interests and multiple deadlines.
Your responsibilities will include:
Providing legal and business counsel for the development, production, licensing and distribution of Blue Ant Studios original productions, service productions, treaty co-productions including, formulating legal strategy and business and financing structures.
Providing strategic advice regarding production structuring to assist in the procurement of all available Canadian production funding, including tax credits, CMF and independent production funds for our North American original productions, service productions and treaty co-productions.
Negotiating terms and drafting/reviewing production and distribution related agreements including (1) development agreements (e.g. rights acquisition, writer agreements etc.) (2) production agreements for television productions and digital content such as chain of title, co-venture and co-production agreements, broadcast license, agreements with talent (3) financing agreements and documentation and (4) distribution related agreements for Blue Ant and third party content.
You are an ideal candidate if you have/are:
A law degree from a recognized institution and are a member in good standing of a Canadian law society.
10+ years of relevant experience in the Canadian production industry, with preference given to experience in the legal and business affairs department of a production company.
Thorough and detailed knowledge of the production and international distribution processes and associated legal agreements, including guild and union requirements.
A proven track record of providing successful strategic advice and direction on a wide range of production finance and intellectual property issues, licensing and commercial transactions
Exceptional communication, negotiation, conceptual thinking, analytical and problem-solving and decision-making skills
Excellent ability to prioritize and manage competing deadlines and interests and manage multiple projects simultaneously
