Victim Services of Waterloo Region provides immediate crisis response, intervention and prevention services which are responsive to the needs of individuals, families and communities affected by crime and sudden tragedies. Victim Services provides victims of any crime or tragedy with free, non-judgmental and confidential supportive services aimed at early intervention. We provide on-site or over the phone crisis intervention 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Victim Services is currently seeking a Victim Support Coordinator, dedicated to provide a full range of services to victims, witness’ and families impacted by crime and trauma, including but not limited to, client intake, database management, needs assessment, crisis intervention, case coordination, emotional support and referrals, and to participate in stakeholder networks.

PRIMARY FUNCTION

Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Victim Support Coordinator (VSC) will provide extensive supports to victims of crime and sudden tragedy, primarily through the administration of the Victim Quick Response Program + (VQRP+) and the Mobile Tracking System (MTS) program, within the guidelines of the Ministry of the Attorney General. All service provisions will operate in accordance with VSWR policies and procedures and contained in the Operations Manual.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Using a trauma-informed lens, provides immediate support to individuals and families who have been victimized by crime and/or sudden tragedies
  • Coordinating case load of up to 20 active clients through the MTS program
  • Conducts needs assessments with clients on an on-going bases
  • Provides extensive safety planning for clients accessing high risk programming
  • Advocate on behalf of clients and liaise with other professionals as required
  • Maintain client files to ensure backup with electronic records, including updating and maintaining the client contact database
  • Assist with relocation (i.e. housing, witness re-location, risk assessment, etc.
  • Make appropriate agency and community referrals to assist with client needs
  • Other duties as assigned

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • University Degree in sociology/psychology/social work/other relevant field preferred
  • Previous experience working with persons in crisis or persons who have experienced trauma (2+ years preferred)
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse communities
  • Knowledge of/familiarity with working with multiple databases
  • Knowledge of intimate partner violence/power and control dynamics within abusive relationships
  • Familiarity with community and governmental agencies throughout the Region
  • Strong knowledge of the legal system would be considered an asset
  • Must have access to a vehicle and a valid driver’s license
  • Must successfully complete and pass a Vulnerable Sector Screening, as well as a Criminal Background Check by Waterloo Regional Police

SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and well developed problem solving skills
  • Case management skills and ability to interpret/apply policies and procedures
  • Ability to provide culturally competent and trauma-informed support
  • Conflict resolution with an ability to interact diplomatically, tactfully, and confidentially
  • Proficient typing skills and ability to maintain multiple databases
  • Well developed organizational and prioritization skills
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and individually
  • Required language skills: Fluent English – read, write, and speak
  • Bilingualism/a second language is considered an asset – read, write, and speak

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • FT 35 hours/week working primarily out of Kitchener Central location, with occasional travel when required
  • After hours/On-call support as required on a rotating basis
  • The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements
  • A valid Ontario’s driver’s license, insurance and a reliable vehicle is required to fulfill the requirements of this position
  • Mentally and physically able to perform all tasks assigned, including lifting and carrying equipment
  • Successful completion of a detailed criminal background check
  • All responsibilities will be performed in keeping with the trauma-informed philosophical framework set out in the Mandate and Mission of Victim Services of Waterloo Region
  • This position exposes the incumbent to possible vicarious trauma that results from empathetic engagement with recently traumatized clients
