The Office of Research Services within VP Research is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Director, Grants Awards & Ethics
Reporting to the Associate Vice-President (Research) / Executive Director of Research Services, the Director, Grants Awards and Ethics is an essential member of the senior leadership team in Research Services. This office is a key catalyst in providing end to end seamless support to research endeavours undertaken by the University. The team of Directors overseeing the office provide senior level strategic planning advice for effective research support, visionary leadership, management of effective communication both within the office and externally (researchers, funding partners, senior administration) and directing day-to-day office operations.
This key position interacts directly and regularly with the Office of the Vice President (Research) on a myriad of issues in relation to the institutional research portfolio. Judgment, decision making, and implementation, impact programs and services involving researchers, senior research administration, departments, faculties and other institutional service units.
The impact of decisions made will be University-wide. The advice, decisions and actions of the Director, Grants, Awards and Ethics may create contractual, legal and ethical implications for the University. The role depends on diplomacy, foresight and sound judgment being effectively exercised to ensure continued goodwill and ongoing sponsored research funding. Constant changes mandated by research funding agencies, ambiguity of work environment, shifting priorities, and constant, simultaneous deadlines require rapid adaptation to complex situations and mitigation of a stressful work environment.
Reporting to the Director, Grants, Awards and Ethics are the following positions:
Manager, External Grants
Specialist, Internal Grants and Training Programs
Manager, Ethics and Compliance
Prizes and Awards Specialist
Quality Assurance and Regulatory Compliance Specialist
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
Provides leadership to direct reports. Hires, assesses progress and provides disciplinary action
Contributes to a positive and supportive work environment focused on achieving results and ensuring individual excellence and high-performing teams
Provides an innovative and proactive approach to service delivery
Facilitates the research process through the provision of expert advice, assistance and information to faculty members in order to stimulate research sponsorships and nominations
Oversees the review of all internal and external grants and awards applications and nomination packages on behalf of the University, ensuring all University and funding agency requirements have been met
Develops and maintains communication strategies and information programs to aggressively promote research funding and nomination opportunities and the services provided by Research Services in support of research related activities
Explores and integrates innovative approaches to increase and maximize the University's participation in research funding opportunities in order to achieve the University's Eyes High goals
Ensures continual development and streamlining of administrative processes and procedures across the unit to facilitate the application/nomination process and an innovative and proactive approach to service delivery
Oversees the administration and compliance services, activities, processes and staff in the Research Ethics and Compliance Division
Oversees the quality assurance program for investigator-initiated clinical research
Ensures adequate training, education and support is provided to faculty, students, staff and committee members in regulatory requirements for research.
Represents the Office of Research Services on standing and ad hoc committees
Formulates appropriate recommendations for action for the Associate Vice President (Research), the Vice President (Research) or the Vice President (Finance and Services)
Ensures institutional accountability and compliance with internal and sponsor policies applicable to the administration of research programs
Establishes and maintains positive and effective working relationships with constituents both internal and external to the University
Qualifications / Requirements:
University degree (or very significant experience) with several years progressively responsible experience in a senior administrative role, preferably in an academic environment (or a combination of related experience and training)
Ability to operate within a complex, multi-faceted and highly centralized work environment and to work independently and yet participate as a strong team player
Extensive knowledge and understanding of University policies and procedures
Extensive knowledge and understanding the federal granting agencies policies and procedures
Excellent organizational and analytical skills as well as advanced written and oral communication skills
Strong leadership capabilities with a demonstrated ability to set a clear vision, achieve results and to lead and motivate others
Strong commitment to achieving high quality results and personal excellence
Superior interpersonal skills, flexibility, tact and perseverance
The ability to build and maintain collaborative working relations both internal and external to the institution
Capacity to adjust the work schedule to meet multiple demands and pressures, and a demonstrated ability to provide a consistently high level of service
