Mount Royal University Cougars Athletics and Recreation takes an inclusive, student-centered approach in offering groups and individuals opportunities to bolster their health and wellness through a wide range of programming and activities ranging from beginner sports enthusiast to our eight Cougars varsity athletic programs.

About the Role

The Fitness and Customer Experience Coordinator is a member of the Recreation team of Cougars Athletics and Recreation, which actively creates, promotes, and sustains an environment in which the Mount Royal University community is challenged and supported in pursuit of personal growth in the areas of Athletics and Recreation. The recreation team is driven by its goal to be leaders in Recreation and to inspire our community to live well.

Reporting to the Fitness and Customer Experience Supervisor, the incumbent is responsible for creating inviting and inclusive experiences for all members of the campus community in the Fitness and Customer Service Centre. This position provides meaningful developmental and experiential learning experiences to a large network of casual staff and student leaders. Business management duties include managing day to day member services functions at the Customer Service Centre, locker membership coordination, as well as, ensuring compliance with institutional policies and procedures.


Facility Operations within the Service Centre

Guide the day to day operations of the Fitness and Customer Service Centre including staff scheduling, monitoring facility access, supervision of activity spaces, maintaining/cleaning equipment, processing activity registrations; member services; dealing with difficult customers; and supervision of student staff.
Implement systems, policies, and procedures that foster participation, access, and enjoyment in all spaces.
Update equipment lending and POS item inventory records. Compare equipment and supply inventory lists to stock and resolve discrepancies.
Manage daily facility and equipment checks and ensures that equipment maintenance issues are communicated to the Facilities team and status updates are provided to front line casual employees.
Develop and maintain a culture which resolves concerns and closes the feedback loop in a timely fashion.
Model, encourage and demonstrate service excellence standards.

Staff Management

Aid in the hiring, training, and supervision of all casual staff.
Develop performance evaluations and coach/mentor casual staff.
Guide team building and design opportunities for casual staff training, encouraging continual learning and developmental growth.
Compile casual staff certifications and/or qualifications in accordance with the best practices for their job responsibilities.

Business Management

Direct the day to day and on-going functions of locker membership management.
Coordinate the daily and on-going functions of member services including administering membership cancellation and hold requests.
Administer university policies regarding business procedures such as cash handling, deposits, Payment Card Industry, and Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
Assist with the creation of area budgets including revenue and expense forecasts.
Support the development of innovative collaborative partnerships to advance the departmental, divisional, and institutional strategic reach.

Passion and energy for increasing a sense of belonging through inclusive service initiatives.
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, preferably in physical literacy, recreation, physical education, sport management, or related field.
Minimum 18 to 24 months previous work experience in recreation, sport management, and or service/sales, with supervisory experience.
Experience training, supervising, and leading casual/student staff, including coordinating and scheduling a casual employee base.
A high degree of familiarity with fitness and recreation operations, programs, and services is necessary.
Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated innovation, creativity, and informed risk-taking.
Proficiency in computer software applications, including all Google suite applications, and experience with Recreation software (ActiveNet, Innosoft Fusion, CLASS, etc)
Knowledge of theories and practices in promoting student development and learning.
Standard First Aid & Basic Rescuer CPR
Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

AFLCA Certification
Relevant experience in a comparable university or similar recreation setting
Experience with ActiveNet or similar recreation registration and facility management software
Membership and active involvement in relevant professional organizations such as ARPA, NIRSA, AFLCA, and/or other higher education associations.

Salary: $2,018.00 Semi-monthly
