About the Department of Cougars Athletics and Recreation
Mount Royal University Cougars Athletics and Recreation takes an inclusive, student-centered approach in offering groups and individuals opportunities to bolster their health and wellness through a wide range of programming and activities ranging from beginner sports enthusiast to our eight Cougars varsity athletic programs.
About the Role
The Facility Operations Supervisor is a member of the Facility Operations team of Cougars Athletics and Recreation which actively creates, promotes, and sustains an environment in which the Mount Royal University community is challenged and supported in pursuit of personal growth in the areas of Athletics and Recreation. The Facility Operations team manages and operates all indoor and outdoor facilities, systems, and equipment in the department.
Reporting to the Director, the Facility Operations Supervisor leads in the areas of facility booking administration, facility operations, staff development, facility planning, and risk management. The Supervisor works closely with other staff in the department, as well as the MRU Facilities Management Department, and has three staff direct reports; Facilities Coordinator (operations, maintenance of equipment services), Facilities Usage Coordinator (internal and external rentals), and the Equipment Coordinator (purchasing, vendor contracts).
Collaborate with the Leadership team to create a facility usage plan to maximize facility space.
In conjunction with the Facility Usage Coordinator manage and coordinate a facility usage plan that inspires healthy, sustainable and active lifestyles.
Build relationships with Facilities Management, EHS and Risk Services to ensure all spaces and equipment are attractive, contemporary, clean, and safe at all times.
Work with the Director and campus planners to ensure the protection and allocation of appropriate indoor and outdoor spaces for present and future use.
Co-manage projects with Facilities Management staff to ensure efficiency, effectiveness and all identified needs are met.
Recruit, hire, supervise, assess, and establish professional development plans with all direct reports. Ensure best practices by collaborating with Human Resources as appropriate.
Work with the Coordinators in the hiring, training, supervision, and development of all student staff including goal setting, performance appraisals, and core competency development.
Collaborate with the Employee Development Committee to apply student learning and development best practices where appropriate.
Reinforce the effectiveness and success of the organization through leading, motivating, coaching, mentoring, and inspiring.
Leadership, Development, and Management
Direct and lead facility booking administration, operations and maintenance, event management, support training and development needs, evaluate equipment inventory, risk management, and facility policies.
Work closely with the Finance Officer on the development of budget projections and forecasts.
Research and remain current with emerging trends in facility design, equipment, products, and processes that promote environmental sustainability and stewardship, and incorporate them into departmental plans/budgets.
Work collaboratively within the department to maximize customer experiences in all facilities and all interactions.
Oversee, coordinate and implement preventative maintenance schedules, life cycle maintenance and replacement plans for all equipment, facilities, and systems.
Coordinate safety and risk management plans for all areas, including policy development, and employee training.
Advocate for universal and inclusive design to best serve all clientele.
Departmental, Divisional and Institutional Service and Planning
Support the development of innovative collaborative partnerships to advance the departmental, divisional, and institutional strategic reach.
Work collaboratively to foster department-wide customer experience best practices and protocols.
Collaborate with the department, institutional, and community partners to cultivate leadership, citizenship, and engagement opportunities for student employees and participants.
Passion and energy for contributing to a university community living healthier, more active lifestyles.
Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in recreation, physical education, sport management, facility operations, project management, or a related field.
Minimum 3 to 5 years of progressively responsible relevant experience, including at least 2 years of supervisory experience.
Demonstrated experience in developing and executing project management and risk management plans.
Demonstrated experience with budget development and forecasting.
Computer/technical proficiency in IBM compatible computer systems and Microsoft applications.
Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated innovation, creativity, and informed risk-taking.
Standard First Aid & Basic Rescuer CPR.
Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends as needed.
Relevant additional experience in a comparable university environment.
Advanced Risk Management training and or certification.
Diversity and inclusion training.
Experience with recreation management software platforms.
Ability to articulate higher education trends and issues and their potential impact on collegiate recreation.
Membership and active involvement in relevant professional organizations such as the Alberta Association of Recreation Facility Personnel, ARPA, NIRSA, and/or other higher education associations.
Understanding facility usage and cycles, insurance requirements, and revenue demands as it relates to post-secondary.
Demonstrated experience and ability working with external customers and rental partners
AARFP Building Maintenance – Level 1 or 2 (Alberta Association of Recreation Facility Personnel)
