Job Summary

Under supervision, the Fitness Specialist will be responsible for providing a safe and pleasant environment for all members using the fitness facilities and under the direction of the Community Program Coordinator, this position is also responsible for providing a one on one comprehensive Fitness program in order for clients to achieve their fitness goals.

Note: The successful candidate will be required for performing duties as a Fitness Specialist Level 1 and 2.

Fitness Specialist Level 1

Job Duties

Supervise activity within the fitness facilities, watch for unsafe activity in order to prevent injuries or accidents and instruct members on use of all equipment.
Schedule clients (City employees and the general public) for fitness related orientations and appointments and follows up with individuals that miss their appointments or need further assistance.
Demonstrate proper fitness techniques to clients and at the end of program or on an annual basis recommend a Fitness Re-assessment or program review.
Ensure the site, equipment and supplies are appropriate to the activity and environment and report the maintenance of the equipment in a timely manner to the Community Program Coordinator.
The ability to work effectively with a wide range of fitness levels in a diverse community.
Approachable and open to input from participants.

Requirements

2 years Community College diploma in Fitness and Health Promotion is required.
At least six months of experience.
AED certification.
Standard First Aid with CPR C.
Currently active in the field of fitness.
Ability to read, understand, follow and enforce safety procedures.
Excellent verbal/written communication skills, leadership skills, customer service skills and sensitivity to interact with a diversity of patrons and staff in a courteous and efficient manner.
The ability to work effectively with a wide range of fitness levels in a diversity community.
Knowledge of aspects of fitness, wellness and basic training principles, fitness theory: skeletal, muscular, neurological, cardiovascular and pulmonary systems and components of a workout from warm-up, cardiovascular and resistance training to cool-down.
Service Excellence: Meets or exceeds service standards when interacting with customers in the community and in the organization.
Change & Innovation: Responds positively and professionally to change and helps others through change.
Teamwork & Relationship Building: Interacts with others in an inclusive, collaborative and respectful way that creates effective working relationships.

Fitness Specialist Level 2

Job Duties

Evaluates client needs in physical activity and nutrition based on the CPAFLA (Canadian Physical Activity and Lifestyle approach protocol) and provides the client with a safe and effective exercise plan based on their needs, abilities and goals.
Monitors client resting and exercise heart rate and blood pressure regularly.
Confirms that clients have completed the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q developed by Health Canada), and then provides an individualized training session.
Develops a client specific exercise plan within the client’s level of ability and progresses to more advanced training techniques with clients once the proper competency has been achieved.
Ensures that one-on-one educational fitness program promotes a health and fitness through realistic goal setting and education.
Modifies all client exercise techniques as needed.

Qualifications

Minimum 2 years Community College Diploma, preferably in Fitness and Health Promotion.
Possess a valid Personal Training Certification (CanFit Pro, ACSM, CPTN, NSCA or equivalent).
Current Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology (CSEP) Certification or licensed Kinesiologist (College of Kinesiologists of Ontario) would be an asset.
Group Fitness Certification and ability to teach a variety of classes an asset.
At least two years of experience in exercise prescriptions and appraisals an asset.
Proven record of experience in fitness center sales and service an asset.
Experience working with a variety of clients and ages.
