A Day in the Life…

The IT Security Analyst works with the Infrastructure & Security Specialist, Information Technology Services to collaborate on the security and monitoring of networks and servers at Brock University. The Analyst implements best practices around security and monitoring functions

As the IT Security Analyst, you will:

  • Conduct regular reviews, internal and external scans, and vulnerability and penetration tests of IT infrastructure, applications and provide analysis and recommendations based on assessment;
  • Facilitate the implementation of security controls based upon best practices that fit within the ITS department strategic priorities and the University’s strategic mandate;
  • Assess, document, and make recommendations on known vulnerabilities, mitigating factors and collaborate on developing corrective action plans;
  • Monitor intrusion detection system and perform complex analyses the results;
  • Report and escalate critical system attack vectors and weaknesses;
  • Collaborate in the development of an incident reporting system as it relates to the network and system security infrastructure;
  • Participate on key security projects with Universities and Colleges across Ontario and Canada wide;
  • Partner with the Infrastructure team in support of the data center;
  • Collaborate in the implementation of IT monitoring and system security documentation and processes;
  • Identify, document, and assess process functions, security weaknesses, vulnerabilities, and controls;
  • Advocate security challenges and recommendations;
  • Identify, recommend, and coordinate improvements and enhancements to network and system security;
  • Collaborate in security specific awareness training for technology staff to ensure compliance with regulations and University policy;
  • Provide subject matter expertise pertaining to system and network security;
  • Train others on, and advocate for best practices in information security;
  • Conduct information security research.

What you Need to Succeed…

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science;
  • At least 3-7 years of IT experience, with a minimum of 2 years of demonstrated experience in IT system security and monitoring/ operations and infrastructure support;
  • In-depth knowledge of system security best practices and policies, IT compliance and regulations;
  • In-depth knowledge of current and emerging infrastructure technologies, specifically firewalls, vulnerability scanners, centralized logging and intrusion prevention/detection systems, with the ability to integrate new components into existing infrastructure;
  • In-depth knowledge of security related tools and technologies;
  • Working knowledge of operating system and network design, installation and administration;
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to support of Microsoft operating systems, with an emphasis on server operating systems;
  • In depth knowledge of servers and firewalls;
  • Excellent listening, verbal, and written communication skills with a proven ability to communicate with tact and diplomacy;
  • Effective presentation skills, with the ability to present technical ideas to varied audiences, in a clear and understandable manner;
  • Excellent customer service skills;
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in work performed;
  • Ability to solve complex technical problems and learn new skills quickly;
  • Ability to implement infrastructure solutions, following designs, infrastructure Strong analytical and critical thinking skills relevant to development of policy, project planning, scheduling, and reporting;
  • Ability to effectively manage time and set priorities working with multiple staff, stakeholders, tasks, projects, and deadlines;
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement to know when and how to respond to different situations timely;
  • Ability to learn independently and keep pace with the changing information environment;
  • Ability to analyze problems, research possible solutions, and identify lingering issues.

Preferred or Asset Skills:

  • Certified Information Systems Security;
  • Experience with PCI-DSS compliance;
  • ITIL and/or project management experience;
  • Experience with Microsoft System Centre Suite;
  • Experience in an education or government organization.

Salary Information

  • Job Grade: L $55,827 - $76,171 per annum;
  • This is an ongoing regular position which includes full comprehensive benefits coverage and tuition waiver.
