Your Opportunity

The Wildlife Team has multiple opportunities for experienced Junior or Intermediate Field Biologists. The successful candidates will join our team of wildlife biologists as a Bird Survey Crew Lead related to a major capital project in northern British Columbia.

This role is a contract from July to September with potential for extension.

Your Key Responsibilities

Leading Marbled Murrelet surveys and habitat assessments and/or nest sweeps for breeding birds
Ensuring that their crew follows the plans developed for the Project
Conducting pre-dawn audio-visual surveys and habitat assessments
Undertaking systematic surveys using prescribed protocols, identifying nests or suspected nests by sight and sound, recording data, and establishing setbacks around nests
Using professional judgement in combination with prescribed protocols to address issues, establish setbacks, and provide general advice in the field
Managing, planning, and leading Marbled Murrelet audio-visual surveys and habitat assessments
Managing, planning, and leading nest sweep field programs (non-Marbled Murrelet)
Leading and directing junior staff in field activities
Managing tasks according to approved scopes of work
Understanding best management practices and techniques for completing bird nest sweeps.
Contributing technical guidance to the field team through supervision, training, and mentoring to junior staff.
Creating a culture of safety through participation in Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) Policies, Procedures, Standards and Guidelines in the execution of all work

Your Capabilities and Credentials

Proven technical, communication, and organization skills
Experience leading marbled murrelet habitat assessments and audio-visual surveys
Experience leading migratory bird nest sweeps or point-count surveys in northern BC required
The ability to identify most birds of northern BC by sight and sound
Understanding of migratory bird species nesting habitat associations, nest chronology, and nesting behaviors, for species occurring in northern BC
Experience working in a construction environment is preferred
Experience driving large trucks on unpaved roads, particularly active industrial or forest service roads
Experience using digital data collection tools
Ability to work in a collaborative team environment
Capable of working with and providing advice to clients and contractors
Able to deal with changing conditions and priorities while in the field
Ability to travel for up to two weeks at a time, on multiple trips over the field season
Thrives in an environment with diverse and dynamic projects, and enjoys working on multi-disciplinary scopes of work

Education and Experience

A Bachelor’s degree in Biology is preferred, though technical diploma may be acceptable

Have or working towards a Professional accreditation (i.e. P.Bio, R.P.Bio) strongly preferred

Minimum of 3 years of experience as a wildlife biologist, with experience completing marbled murrelet surveys

Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather
