You will be a key part of a research-informed, dynamic & multi-award winning team that provides culturally sensitive services to refugee/newcomer youth and their families. You will work to address the trauma, intergenerational conflict, acculturative stress and isolation that increase youth’s vulnerability to mental health issues, substance abuse and related crime that can also lead to family dysfunction. You will help youth succeed in schools, as well as find meaningful recreational, cultural activities & employment programs. Your work will be anchored with families & promote healthy family functioning.
You will work alongside mental health counsellors and trained outreach staff to positively model culture, encourage healthy participation in community activities, facilitate positive peer relationships and collective well-being.
About the Role
You will apply a multidisciplinary approach to work with school administration, other clinicians and referral sources to support high-intensity interventions for youth (primarily from refugee/newcomer households) that divert them from the criminal justice system, dropping out or other adverse outcomes. Your work will be deeply integrated with schools, communities & families; it will take you into kids homes, involve supporting parents/families, and working through complex barriers that ensure youth flourish.
Intensive Supports
You will work with teacher liaisons, support workers & other referral sources to…
- Develop individualised and effective strength based service plans for youth and family members in consultation with support workers
- Provides direct clinical services such as intake, assessment, treatment, and crisis intervention
- Work in consultation/liaison with community agencies, schools, hospitals, and other programs
- Administers and scores mental health-related test instruments appropriate to the profession.
- Provide comprehensive assessment/ treatment planning and conduct individual, group and family therapy
- Provide clinical supervision to ensure that the team are performing all job duties at a high level of quality, including appropriate therapeutic interventions for clients
- Promote/ maintain effective working relationships with clients and families, physicians, schools and hospitals to coordinate services, secure input, cooperation, resolve conflicts, influence outcomes, provide community consultation and provide educational services and training on emotional and behavioural disturbances.
- Work collaboratively and flexibly with youth and their families as well as cross sector service providers.
- Actively engage parents in culturally relevant ways, optimally in their primary language
- Actively connect families with appropriate supports
- Supporting youth with personal coaching to improve attendance and grades
- Actively and creatively identify/implement solutions to work through the barriers youth may be facing; needing a ride to school, connection to addictions treatment, mentorship, abuse, etc
- Following up with the youth’s support network (teachers, clinicians, support workers from within/outside the agency) to ensure youth aren’t falling through the cracks & that their support network is informed and engaged
- Support youth/families with assisted referrals & proactively connect them with opportunities
Outreach & Programming in Schools
Work in concert with youth outreach workers to…
- Facilitate belonging and learning outcomes by helping youth to see themselves, their identity and culture reflected throughout their school
- Create a warm, welcoming and consistent presence in schools that integrates well within the larger school ecosystem but which speaks to the unique needs of racialized/refugee/newcomer youth (eg. facilitating prayer space, cultural celebrations, activities for Black History Month, Islamic Heritage month, etc
- Host/design spaces for youth within school eg. prayer/programming room
- Engage youth in activities that promote strength, competencies and resiliency.
- Develop quarterly/ yearly schedules and coordinate with school admin
- Support youth to design, plan and carry out activities
- Collaborate with Indigenenous serving and other on-school programs
- Ensure a positive & collaborative relationship with admin through collaboration on scheduling, & supporting student attendance
- Work closely with teachers to support youth learning objectives
- Support youth to constructively work through grievances through ombuds type activities.
- Attend community meetings and effectively liaise and network with various community organisations (schools, community associations) in order to develop systems to support and promote opportunities for young people.
Mother+Teacher Circles
- Establish/maintain a regular pulse of mother+teacher circles that provides group supports, connection and guides programming
- Support/maintain vehicles for accountability to community and school administration
Reporting & Tracking
- Work with external researchers/evaluators to refine approach & analyse outcomes
- Ensure excellence in tracking and reporting student outcomes through consistent intakes, case notes, and coordinated evaluation efforts
- Maintains appropriate clinical/client/administrative records.
Work Environment
You will work in schools and communities. You will be responsible for creating & maintaining a vibrant and attractive space within schools
Trainings
Stay updated with CPR, Family violence, suicide training and motivational interviewing training.
Attend other training sessions as suggested by the Clinical Director and Program Team Lead to stay current with the new knowledge and practices.
Required Knowledge/ Skills:
- A masters degree in or related to social work is highly desired. Comparable experience will be considered
- Competence in Arabic, Dari or Somali is highly valued.
- Able to work from a client centred model using cultural sensitivity
- Applicable knowledge and adherence of different Acts and frameworks- Alberta Family Violence Framework, Child and Family Enhancement Act;
- Maintaining an attitude of professionalism and strictly abiding by best practices along with agency policy and procedures;
- Knowledge of the Muslim religion and culture is required
- Ability to work in a fast paced environment and client crisis situations;
- Ability to be effective with minimal supervision;
- Ability to use critical thinking skills in crisis situations involving families;
- A good foundation of knowledge of the causes, effects and solutions of family violence in ethno-cultural communities.
- Strong digital literacy skills across platforms is a must
- Organisational and time management skills
- Working with agency partners to refer clients and access additional services
- Compliance with AHS recommendations for visiting vulnerable clients
