Position: Packaging Development Specialist

Position Status: Full-Time

Shift: Day Shift

The Packaging Development Team is part of the Product Development department. The Packaging Development Team is led by a Packaging Development Manager and the team is responsible to assess and manage component and packaging functionality of new and existing programs along with recommendation to meet changes in components and packaging. With the introduction of new equipment in production, Packaging Development works closely with the Technical Resource Group (Engineering) to ensure proper communication of packaging specifications.

Reporting to the Packaging Development Manager, the Packaging Technologist will be part of a team of specialists that are the focal point on both client and CLI Innovation component issues requiring cross departmental interface with Research and Innovation, Engineering, Quality Control Packaging, the PD Innovation team and Sales.

Key Responsibilities:

Component and Packaging Functionality Assessment

  • Liaison between Product Development, Manufacturing / Assembly, Account Management, Research &Innovation (R&I), Engineering, Quality Control Packaging (QC Packaging and Procurement on all component related issues.
  • To assess and manage component and packaging functionality of new and existing programs along with recommendations to meet changes in components, packaging and formula.
  • Evaluate and address components issues effecting production and /or product quality/compatibility
  • Perform tertiary components development and transit testing.
  • Assist with Pilots (line trials) on components and filling related issues.
  • Provide expertise and assistance to QC and Engineering to solve component and / or equipment related issues
  • Interface with appropriate groups in order to provide a manufacturing capability assessment for all new products. This will include componentry / packaging design, functionality and suitability for use on current and proposed manufacturing lines.
  • Support QC and Purchasing in resolving / improving component related issues with suppliers

Innovation Development (Packaging) and New Capex Project Support

  • Assist in value analysis, cost reduction, and quality improvements projects.
  • Assist on packaging related capital projects which will involve investigating new packaging concepts.
  • Provide expertise and assistance to operations to integrate componentry onto new and / or existing equipment.
  • Collaborate with CLI PD Innovation in sourcing new packaging solutions and supporting strategic partnerships with packaging suppliers in support of the Packaging Manager’s direction.
  • In liaison with QC/clients, develop component and manufacturing standards for new products.
  • Provide expertise and assistance to R&I and Engineering in order to improve and / or resolve manufacturing and filling related issues.

Skills and Experience Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Packaging/Mechanical Engineering, College degree in Packaging Technology or equivalent experience.
  • PAC course or IoPP Certification would be an asset
  • Minimum 2-5 years related experience in Manufacturing, Manufacturing Engineering, or Packaging Environment including component supplier manufacturing knowledge, and plant manufacturing experience.
  • Must be self-motivated, detail-oriented, a team player, able to multi-task and meet required deadlines
  • Excellent computer, organizational, verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills
