JOB OPPORTUNITY DESCRIPTION

Members - Part Time

The Employment and Assistance Appeal Tribunal is looking for Members to hear and determine appeals of denials of employment assistance, disability assistance and child care subsidies. The decisions under appeal are made by the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction and the Ministry of Children and Family Development.

Hearings may be in person, by teleconference, or based solely on written submissions and occur throughout the Province. Hearings generally have a panel of three members hearing each appeal.

A Member controls the number of hearings they choose to accept and are remunerated for each appeal heard. To maintain an adequate and diverse roster of Members, the Tribunal seeks applicants on an on-going basis throughout the Province.

Employment and Assistance Appeal Tribunal

The Tribunal is established under the Employment and Assistance Act to provide fair, independent, decisions of appeals. Persons bringing an appeal are asking the Tribunal to determine whether the Ministry's decision regarding certain assistance or subsidies was reasonable.

Qualifications

To be considered for appointment to the Tribunal, an individual must:

Have an understanding of the essential elements for the conduct of a fair and objective appeal;
Have an understanding of the key aspects of the Employment and Assistance Act , Employment and Assistance for persons with Disabilities Act , and the Child Care Subsidy Act , and all associated regulations;
Not be or have been an employee within the past six months of the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction or the Ministry of Children and Family Development;
Not be an employee of the Provincial Government pursuant to the Public Service Act ;
Not be a recipient of benefits from the programs from which the Tribunal hears appeals; and
Not have a personal, professional, financial or other interest in matters coming before the Tribunal that would cause a reasonable person to think the individual could not be impartial.

Ability to interpret and apply legislation;
Ability to listen and communicate clearly and effectively;
Ability to work well in group settings;
Computer literacy;
Commitment to ongoing development; and
Commitment to respecting diversity and inclusivity.
