The Specialist, Electrical Controls and Automation Engineer reviews system performance proactively, identifies potential control logic problems with mail processing equipment (MPE) and works with Maintenance to prevent problems. Ensures that all automated processes are functioning at optimal performance levels. Collaborates with team members to fix system issues, reviewing the programming and design to modify, update, design or commission updates to system control logic or the processes.
Below are the main job requirements and responsibilities for the Specialist, Electrical Controls and Automation Engineer.
Leads day-to-day issues resolution relating to MPE performance through extensive interaction with multiple vendors, system integrator and other Engineering groups in order to bring problems to a resolution. Ensures that problems are addressed at expected service level agreements. Provides on-call/standby support as required to ensure that MPE is in optimal working condition.
Conducts root cause analysis to identify issues which may result in changes in procedures or updates in system logic. Communicates with all stakeholders including the vendor and Engineering groups in order to identify preventative measures. Initiates automation debugging and continual improvement to increase system reliability and productivity.
Manages and leads automation projects including development and implementation of control logic or changes to processes in order to meet business requirements. Leads the project team in the analysis of user specifications, reviews proposals and implements optimal technical solution. Studies and adjusts project/enhancement priorities.
Develops documentation such as technical specifications, procedures or any other associated documentation for machine control for internal documentation or procurement activities purposes. Reviews technical standards to ensure compliance to all applicable regulation and to ensure systems are functioning in an optimized capacity. Provides training and support to peers and maintenance technicians as required
Develops project plans, provides cost estimates, prepares business cases, resource estimates and planned life cycle time frames; reports on related costs, contracts and investments issues. Reviews proposals provided by the project team and subject matter experts and implements an optimal solution; reviews and adjusts projects/enhancements priorities in accordance with user requirements.

Conducts research studies, as required, in the areas of design, operation, reliability, maintenance and safety of various systems, automation and control features in order to determine nature of changes or improvements required; proposes and/or designs specific modifications, alternatives and improvements arising from such research.
Develops the technical requirements for change, reviews the proposals from the vendors, and take a leading role in testing to confirm the issue(s) have been resolved. Ensures all change initiatives conform to legislation and standards.
Supervises enhancements and provides ongoing support to existing production applications ensuring proper integration with other systems. Reviews and approves the acceptance criteria for system changes testing and installation. Reviews and approves payment for contracted work. Reports projects/enhancement issues to management on timely basis.
Advises management on technological advances in Engineering and Systems features, procedures, standards by maintaining an awareness of the “state of the art” for electrical control and automation engineering principles and design.
Evaluates engineering information submitted for approval, such as network diagrams, specifications, pre-production information, prototypes, and costs and benefits and proposals submitted by consultants, contractors, manufacturers and suppliers. Recommends and prepares substantiation for acceptance or rejection of proposals.
University degree in Electrical Engineering or a similar Automation and Controls degree
A professional engineer (P.Eng) license in Canada or registered as an Engineer in Training (EIT) with a provincial engineering association may be required. (Provincial Exceptions related to Engineering Acts may be considered)
4+ years of recent experience in electrical/controls design and troubleshooting in automated systems and development of documentation, drawings and diagrams.
4+ years of recent experience in preventive maintenance recommendations
4+ years of recent experience in reviewing, authorizing, coordinating and managing the deployment of new systems or execution of system controls changes
Other Candidate Requirements
Strong analytics and programming skills
Proficiency in common industrial protocols, data exchange and other communication protocol
Experience with automation software and hardware
Experience with various software including Microsoft Office, web application development, databases, AutoCAD etc.
Networking & devices: routers, switches and hubs, network configuration, deployment of anti-virus software
Familiarity with electrical codes and standards i.e.. CSA Z460, CSA Z462, CSA Z463, and the Canadian Electrical Code
Design of process control circuits and safety circuits
Design of processing control software
Ability to work in a team and to build and maintain harmonious and effective relationships with client groups
Excellent decision-making and judgment
Ability to mentor and train technicians as required
Able to work various shifts as required
Able to provide standby (on-call) support as required
Strong communications skills, both oral and written.
