Primary Purpose: The Clinical Dentist provides the full-scope of general practice dental services to patients of the College of Dentistry’s clinics, including but not limited to: examinations, X-rays and other diagnostic testing, treatment planning, oral hygiene instruction, nutrition counseling, prophylaxes, restorative fillings, stainless steel crowns, root canal treatment, periodontal care, removable and fixed prosthodontic care, extractions, and other oral health services within the scope of practice of dentistry in Saskatchewan. The incumbent will work as a member of a multidisciplinary team providing high quality services designed to promote, maintain, or restore oral health for priority populations served by the College of Dentistry, University of Saskatchewan. This position also provides general supervision and guidance to student clinical work to enhance the student experience.

Nature of Work: Reporting to the Director of Inclusive Community Outreach, this position works with clinic patients, dental students, staff and faculty to support the patient care function from a general practitioner dentist perspective. The clinical dentist provides professional, high quality service to clinic and must have a good overall understanding of Clinic and College policies and processes to appropriately meet the needs of students and patients. Due to high volumes of work in a busy clinical environment with frequent interruptions, this position requires the ability to multi-task with speed and accuracy as patient care and clinic income are directly affected. This position has little control of the work pace, as pace is driven by clinic, patient, and student activity. Discretion is required as this position is privy to and works with sensitive and confidential patient information. The Clinical Dentist works primarily in College outreach clinics but may be required to provide service at other clinics, requiring travel within the province.

The Clinical Dentist will join a large number of generalist and specialist dentists working in College of Dentistry clinics, including a 63 unit Undergraduate Education Clinic, a six unit Specialty Clinic, a five unit Oral Surgery Unit, a six unit Radiology Unit, and a six unit Community Dental Clinic.

Accountabilities:
Provide comprehensive, patient-specific dental treatment services to clinical patients in accordance with the Dental Disciplines Act and that meet the standards of care for a general practitioner in Saskatchewan, including but not limited to:
Examinations
Diagnosing oral diseases
Promoting oral health and disease prevention
Creating treatment plans to maintain or restore the oral health of patients
Interpreting x-rays and diagnostic tests
Ensuring the safe administration of anesthetics
Monitoring growth and development of the teeth and jaws
Performing surgical procedures on the teeth, bone and soft tissues of the oral cavity
Nutrition counselling
Periodontal care
Restorative care
Pediatric care
Orthodontic care
Root canal treatment
Removable and fixed prosthodontic care
Prescribing and dispensing medication
Provide general supervision, guidance and mentoring to students on the clinic floor, providing them with feedback and advice to ensure proper patient care and enhance the student experience
Participate in dental health promotion and staff professional development activities
Maintain license and good standing with the College of Dental Surgeons of Saskatchewan
Develop strong relationships with staff, faculty and students, fostering a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach to patient care

Qualifications
Education: Doctorate of Dental Surgery or Doctorate of Dental Medicine from a recognized post-secondary institution.

Licenses: Must be licensed to practice dentistry and in good standing with the College of Dental Surgeons of Saskatchewan

Experience: Experience working with priority populations in northern and rural communities is an asset.

Skills: Strong foundation in the practice of clinical dentistry; Ability to provide independent state-of-the-art dental care to patients; Strong clinical skills to serve as a positive role model and supervisor for students; Ability to utilize and assimilate available clinical information to make decisions regarding patient care; Demonstrated initiative, integrity, collegiality and professionalism; Effective oral and written communication skills; Effective time management, problem solving, organizational, and interpersonal skills; Experience with dental software (e.g. axiUm, ClearDent, Dentrix) is an asset. Must be able to travel freely in the assigned region.
