This position is for family business that actively operates in both the Construction Industry (Electrical Contractors) and Multi-Family Rental Properties Industry.


Located in Calgary, the Accounting and HR Administrator will be primarily responsible for the day-to-day accounting, which includes business financial affairs for three companies. However, responsibilities will be split across two main categories of work: financial operations and human resources, ensuring all accounting related activity is recorded properly and in a timely manner; administering most areas human resources and providing the required support to all stakeholders and staff.


A “hands-on” individual that presents professionally, has highly effective interpersonal skills, exhibits maturity and experience, and builds immediate trust and confidence. This individual is resourceful with a positive attitude and ability to prioritize workload; multi-tasker who utilizes a practical approach to problems and projects in order to deliver on commitments and deadlines.


Financial Operations:

  • Perform accounting and bookkeeping activities for three operating companies
  • Prepare all financial reports and records up to the preparation of financial statements
  • Work with external accountant in order to coordinate all tax filings for the business’s Year-end
  • Prepare journal entries on a timely basis
  • Handle all banking, including prepare bank deposits and credit card reconciliations
  • Prepare accounts payable cheques and electronic fund transfers
  • Assist with the administration of insurance certificates of insurance
  • Monitor cash flows
  • Manage the information gathering for automobile services and automobile insurance claims
  • Process all required source deductions and tax installments the businesses
  • Process the bi-weekly payroll (25 employees total) for two of the companies
  • Process the year-end payroll reporting and WCB annual reporting for (25-35 employees)
  • General bookkeeping, accounts payable and accounts receivable

Human Resources and Office Administration:

  • Maintain employee files and legal files
  • Maintain employee benefit program
  • Maintain payroll government statistical reporting
  • Make applications for government summer employee grant programs
  • Provide administrative support to the Owner and/or other Family Members as required
  • Compose and prepare letters, emails and other correspondence
  • Maintain employee files and legal files
  • Accurate filing of electronic and paper document
  • Maintain Office supplies


  • Post-Secondary education, preferably an Accounting diploma/degree or other related post-secondary field
  • CPA designation or working towards CPA designation is an asset
  • A minimum of 5 years of related business experience; previous experience in a Family business would be an asset
  • Strong full-cycle bookkeeping skills and accounting operations experience
  • Strong full-cycle payroll skills and experience
  • A general understanding corporate tax experience would be an asset
  • Ability to represent the Owner/Family in a professional and positive manner
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communications
  • Judicious when dealing with personal and confidential matters
  • Comfortable with technology and utilizing it in order to create efficiencies
  • Strong computer skills including all aspects of MS Office; experience with accounting software (Sage experience would be an asset)
  • A critical thinker with excellent analytic abilities
  • Detail oriented
  • Well established organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and multi-task to meet deadlines
  • Good problem-solving skills – able to quickly identify issues and make sound, timely decisions
