In your role as the Assistant Head Nurse (AHN), you will be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care in accordance with the Strathcona Community Hospital’s policies and procedures. You will assume responsibility and acts as a resource for daily staffing and operative planning, staff development and equipment maintenance. You will work, in collaboration with the Department Manager and Clinical Nurse Educator, on staff development and skills assessment. You will also be responsible for referring issues of a financial or human resource nature to the Manager for their guidance and / or resolution. As the assistant head nurse (AHN), you will also provide feedback for annual performance appraisals by conducting formal and informal skills assessments to determine clinical competence and you will also assist with program development and growth. As an Assistant Head Nurse, you will be responsible for staff assignments, patient flow and acting as a role model, clinical resource and advocate for nursing staff. In addition to providing frontline nursing care, as required, you will take a leadership role in the promotion of quality patient care and the implementation of operational priorities. Your in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience, will assist in providing solutions for complex health care issues at all levels with patients, interprofessional teams, administrators and policy makers. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
Additional Required Qualifications:
A minimum of 3 years of experience within the last 5 years working in an Emergency department. Experience with Charge, Trauma, and Triage within an emergency department required.
Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale (CTAS). Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). Nursing Core Course (TNCC). Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). Bachelor of Science degree in nursing.
