Position Summary

As a Communicator within our Radio Operations bureau, you will be responsible for answering emergency and non-emergency calls for service.
Responsibilities
What will your typical day look like? Answers emergent (911) and non-emergent calls for service. Acquires necessary information to determine service required and/or initiates call for service through Computer Aided Dispatch system. Answers internal lines and complies with request. Initiates support services (calls-out, phone listing, reverse checks, CPIC/CAD queries, records checks, sex offender registry checks, texts and tweets as required). Assigns calls for service, co-ordinates the dispatch of police and other services for each call; monitors the location and activities of all police units via the voice radio and CAD systems and dispatches as appropriate in order to maintain appropriate police coverage. Provides direct assistance and relief for dispatchers (CPIC, telephone calls, and emergency service contacts). Performs additional duties as assigned.

Are you someone with: An education/knowledge reflecting a greater degree of specialization, normally acquired through formalized post-secondary education, (e.g. college) in order to understand and apply contents of manuals specific to communications including protocols and detailed instructions respecting communications systems, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A minimum of two years related experience required; experience in dispatching and/or dealing with the public preferred MS Outlook Working knowledge of CPIC preferred Working knowledge of CAD preferred Well-developed keyboarding skills Exceptional oral communication and listening skills Demonstrated multi-tasking ability Demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills

The hiring process is competitive and extensive and requires applicants to participate in each stage of the recruitment process. Successful candidates must be available to work all shifts (days and afternoons are 8 hours and 45 minutes and midnights are 9 hours)
Our Communications Centre operates 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Training will consist of 4 weeks in-class instruction following a Monday to Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. schedule. After which you will be assigned a radio operations platoon that follows a five (5) week rotation of Days, Afternoons and Nights for additional on-the-floor training.
Applicants in consideration for hire shall be subject to a thorough background investigation that includes, but is not limited to, police checks with local, provincial and out-of-country law enforcement agencies, if required, education credentials, credit and financial inquiries, and personal and work references.

We will be hosting an in-person Communicator General Information Session on Tuesday June 6, 2023 from 6:00pm-8:00pm.
