We are seeking a Retail Store Manager for our Queen Street location, the right candidate needs to be passionate about baked goods, pastries, and coffee as well as having the experience and customer skills to match. At Mabel’s Bakery we are passionate about scratch baking using local high quality ingredients and delivering an exceptional service and that “wow” factor. Founded in 2011, Fresh City is a rapidly growing urban farm, a neighborhood retailer and online farmers market. We are strongly committed to sourcing organic, sustainable and organic ingredients, and delivering excellence in our food & drinks program.

We operate 2 urban farms, 8 retail stores and deliver to thousands of homes across the Toronto area. We operate under the Fresh City, Mabel's Bakery and Healthy Butcher brands. Join us in creating a better life through food!

The first Mabel’s Bakery opened its doors on Roncesvalles in October of 2008 by founders Lorraine Hawley and her husband, Bob Warburton, who noticed a need in the area for a shop that offered great tasting foods that are of high quality. Now in 2020 with 4 retail locations, Mabel’s Bakery still specializes in home-style baked goods, prepared foods, ready meals and artisan breads and cheeses. Mabel’s uses only the highest quality ingredients, choosing local or organic options whenever possible, with no preservatives or artificial flavouring. In 2019 Fresh City Farms purchased Mabel’s Bakery


The Retail Store Manager provides customers with excellent customer service and provides efficient direction for the retail customer service staff overseen in the role. The Retail Store Manager is responsible for every aspect of the retail operations including product sales, merchandising, ordering and managing supplies, inventory, scheduling staff, establishing priorities, reinforcing best practices, coaching and mentoring of retail staff.


Responsibility for the achievement and projection of monthly sales and shared responsibility for meeting gross margin objectives, through payroll and expense management

Provide training, mentoring and direction to staff through hands-on learning and leading by example

Ensure “team leads” are hired, trained, and meeting performance targets

Deliver exceptional coffee and tea product offering, ensuring the wow factor of our coffee is delivered

Communicate and deliver a 5 star customer service standard, this includes friendly and warm greetings to each customer, thanking them for visiting Mabel’s, etc. and making a concerted effort to get to know our customers

Create the staffing schedule to ensure the “right” level of coverage of the retail location, finding replacement personnel as necessary

Responsible for hiring staff, identifying hiring needs, and conducting job interviews.

Operate the Retail Bakery location in a sanitary and safe manner up to Toronto Public Health standards.

Place orders with various suppliers, when needed to maintain required inventory levels of supplies, ingredients and pantry items

Oversee that bank deposits are made frequently, and ensure that the “float” is adequately stocked with coin roles.

Preparation of products, such as sandwiches, bagels & baking off cookies and other case items.

Assist in any fire or evacuation drills and ensure complete familiarization with all exits, including those normally used by customers, as well as fire escapes.


2 years+ Retail Management experience in a similar setting (Bakery, café, etc) leading a team of 68 or more, including training and coaching, with strong leadership and communication.

2 years+ Barista Experience an asset

Excellent knowledge of coffee and tea recipes.

Demonstrated time management and organizational skills.

Must be able to work full time (work week regularly demands in excess of 40 hours) including variable hours including mornings, evenings, weekends and/or holidays.

Strong customer service and troubleshooting skills.

Able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.

Strong work ethic and positive team attitude.

Exposure to extremely hot and extremely cold liquids.

Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer, tablet and peripherals.

Ability to lift up to 50lbs as required.
