Lower Fraser Valley Aboriginal Society (LFVAS) is accepting applications for an Aboriginal Youth Program Assistant for the Aboriginal Youth Homework and Culture Club.

The Program Assistant is responsible for assisting the Program Coordinator in the Aboriginal Youth Homework and Culture Club. This includes, but is not limited to, engaging with program participants, volunteers, and presenters, assisting with program set-up and clean-up, and assisting with program planning.

Reporting to the Program Coordinator, the Program Assistant works closely with the Aboriginal youth, program facilitators, as well as other LFVAS staff, using cultural agility and an Aboriginal-centered, evidence-based service approach.

DURATION: Start January 9, 2020, ongoing through school year

HOURS: 5hrs/wk: Thursdays & Fridays 2:30pm - 5pm

WORK LOCATIONS: Langley (Fort Langley & Walnut Grove)

COMPENSATION: $16.40-$18.05/hour, commensurate with education and experience

Key responsibilities and duties:

  • Assists with twice weekly Aboriginal Youth Homework and Culture Club
  • Creates relationship with Aboriginal Youth participants
  • Assists with set-up and clean-up
  • Assist with program delivery
  • Other related duties as required

Skills & Abilities:

  • Understanding and knowledge of Aboriginal culture, traditions and issues impacting on urban Aboriginal families
  • Must have Aboriginal cultural agility and demonstrate appropriate behavioural competencies
  • Excellent oral and written communications
  • Ability to use Microsoft Word, SharePoint, Excel and Outlook
  • Willingness and ability to participate as a collaborative team member

Experience & Education:

  • Experience working with children or youth
  • Interest in human services, social work or community planning, with an emphasis on meeting the needs of vulnerable populations which may include such disciplines and fields of study as: social work, mental health, rehabilitation practitioner, nursing, youth work, or native studies

Additional Requirements:

  • Must successfully complete Criminal Record Review for work with vulnerable adults and children
  • All workers must be aware of the potential for allegations to be brought against them by clients and therefore, must conduct themselves in a manner where behaviors/actions cannot be misinterpreted
  • Must sign and abide by Oath of Confidentiality
  • Hiring subject to primary source credential verification

Job Type: Part-time

Salary: $16.40 to $18.05 /hour

Experience:

  • some children and youth work: 1 year (Preferred)
  • Aboriginal cultural: 2 years (Preferred)
