HOURS: Currently Days, 8 and 12 hours, may include weekends and holidays

The Asthma-COPD Educator provides and promotes asthma-COPD education through patient focused care to outpatients of all ages. The goal of the Asthma-COPD Education Clinic is to empower patients with the knowledge and education required to improve and maintain good control of their asthma-COPD. Achievement of this goal minimizes hospitalizations and Emergency Room visits as patients understand the importance of early interventions to minimize exacerbations. The Asthma Clinic uses a multi-disciplinary approach which includes nurses, Respirologists, Paediatricians and family physicians. Thorough assessments, goal setting, diagnostic testing and the promotion of asthma-COPD management all assist to improve quality of life and to achieve improved asthma-COPD control.
Graduate of a Respiratory Therapy diploma program OR Degree/Diploma in a recognized health care profession
Completion of an accredited Asthma-COPD Educator program and the Canadian Respiratory Educator Certification Examination or in process
Demonstrated leadership experience
Ability to function as a member of a multidisciplinary team
Excellent facilitation, interpersonal and communication skills
Knowledge of oximetry and spirometry
Strong knowledge of asthma-COPD including symptoms, triggers, treatment therapies, environmental control, disease prevention and management
Knowledge of co-morbid disease processes including allergies, eczema, reflux, CHF, etc.
Thorough knowledge and understanding of the Canadian Thoracic Society Asthma Consensus Guidelines and Canadian Thoracic Society COPD Management Guidelines
Knowledge of best practice guidelines in asthma-COPD management
Knowledge of best practice guidelines in smoking cessation
Strong understanding of diagnostic testing, specifically peak flow monitoring, oximetry and spirometry testing
Able to provide education to all age groups
Strong understanding of educational techniques and methods required by different patients
Ability to adjust educational technique to meet individual patient needs
Able to complete a full respiratory assessment
Knowledge of hospital and community resources
Strong clinical reasoning skills
Strong organization; time management; problem solving; communication skills
Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team environment
Ability to manage caseload
Strong education and presentation skills
Ability to co-ordinate community programs
Knowledge of and sensitivity to diversity issues
