Communications & Public Affairs (C&PA) is responsible for advancing York University's brand and reputation by providing strategic advice and counsel to York senior management, disseminating news, developing and implementing internal and external institutional communications, strategic marketing, special events and developing strong relationships with key stakeholders. C&PA includes the following units: Media Relations, Strategic Communications, Marketing & Creative Services and Business Intelligence and Planning. Reporting to the Director, Strategic Communications, the Communications Planner & Internal Communications Officer helps to develop and execute communication plans, track the completion of activities to meet agreed upon timelines and that internal stakeholder groups are informed of progress. The planner is responsible for assisting the Director, Strategic Communications to develop and execute communication strategies and plans on a broad range of high-profile topics and initiatives arising from within the portfolios of vice-presidents, assistant vice-presidents and other key executives at the University. The incumbent will also play a role in supporting the University's priorities by helping to develop communications strategies that integrate various communication media, tools and products from across the institution.
Bachelor's degree in communications or journalism, new media, English or related field in Communications or an equivalent of 4 years recent experience (defined as within the last five years) working at York University and performing the same or similar tasks. This education equivalency is in addition to the experiential requirements outlined below. Accredited Business Communicator (ABC) designation or APR (Accredited in Public Relations certification) is an asset.
Minimum seven (7) years' experience in communications, including work in a complex public sector environment, preferably within a university setting. Demonstrated experience coordinating projects and overseeing project timelines. Demonstrated writing experience, including demonstrated ability to write in a variety of styles and voices for a range of audiences.
Knowledge and understanding of communications planning, print and electronic media. Familiarity with WordPress is an asset.
Excellent knowledge of the post-secondary education sector, its issues and the ability to understand the university's mission and intersection with the broader community.
Demonstrated ability to work closely with partner groups across the organization and provide support to enable them to achieve their goals and objectives.
Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft office programs (e.g. Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
Strong project planning skills. Familiarity with project management software. Superior oral and written communication skills including strong editing skills and meticulous attention to detail.
Superior interpersonal, decision-making and organizational skills.
Ability to work with and manage to ambiguity and dealing with issues, problems, or events that do not always have a process, system or solution in place.
Highly developed research and presentation skills. ability to process, synthesize and present a diverse range of information. and produce a wide variety of materials to reach varied and targeted audiences within and outside of the University.
Must be service-oriented.
Demonstrated initiative and analytical ability.
Works effectively in a high-pressure environment and manage a large and constantly fluctuating workload to meet fluctuating, tight deadlines resolving complex communications issues.
Professional demeanor. must exercise confidentiality, tact, judgment, discretion and a high degree of political acuity.

Occasional overtime is available during peak periods.
